Technology Club

I’m very excited to be offering Technology Club to 5th and 6th grade students this year! There will be three sessions, with 10 new students per session. We will focus on a new project each trimester. Tech club members will learn a variety of computer skills and become technology leaders in the school. Members will have the opportunity to explore applications, create multimedia projects, code, and use technology to showcase school spirit and highlight student achievements. Students will have responsibilities and assignments outside of club hours, so I’m looking for responsible and creative students that can take on extra work/duties in addition to their classwork. Space is limited, so let your classroom teacher know if you are interested in joining. Spinelli techies unite!

Membership Requirements: 5th-6th Grade; Parent Permission; by INVITATION ONLY (based on teacher recommendation)

Meeting Schedule: Wednesdays at lunch
Session 1 September - November
Session 2 December - February
Session 3 March - May

For more information please contact
Mrs. Biddle, or call 338-6490.

G.A.T.E.

The Spinelli GATE program is an after-school enrichment opportunity for 4-6 grade students that have been tested and designated as GATE students. We offer a hands-on approach to learning that challenges students and engages them in deeper thinking. Research and critical thinking skills are used to solve problems, as well as peer interaction and teamwork. For the 2018/19 school year, the students will be researching magicians and magic tricks, practicing their public speaking, and performing a “magic show” at our Holiday Social in December. We will also be competing in the Nature Bowl again this year, which challenges students to look at local environmental issues and pose problem-solving ideas. Students participate in Bell Ringer activities, team challenges, nature relays, scavenger hunts, and create an Enviro-Mercial of their own. They will compete against other schools in the area at the Placer Nature Center in April.

At Spinelli, third grade students are automatically tested to see if they qualify for the 4-6 grade program for the following year. In addition, any student in grades 4-6 that parents would like tested can fill out the online permission slip on the District Website. Testing usually falls within the normal school day and occurs in late January or early February. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Macek or the school office (916) 338-6490.

Gifted Identification:

Is your student in grades 4 - 7 and currently not identified as receiving gifted services? Did you know that your student can participate in the identification process once each year? OLSAT testing will take place in January/early February 2019. Sign ups for testing are already being accepted and will continue until December 21, 2018. Don’t wait to sign up. Late sign ups won’t be accepted.

To sign up, go to the District GATE Site

Safe School Ambassadors

Safe School Ambassadors® is a national program that we started at Spinelli three years ago. The program was created because schools have recognized that students are the most important group that influences how people feel at school. Student Ambassadors receive two full days of training that will help them notice the many ways students mistreat each other. They are also trained on how they can safely and respectfully respond to mistreatment if they see it on campus. Our Safe School Ambassador program harnesses the power of positive student influence to make our campus a more safe and welcoming place.

For more information please contact Mrs. Luigi, or call 338-6490.

PeaceKeepers

For those who demonstrate excellent leadership qualities, 5th and 6th grade students are given the opportunity to be selected as PeaceKeepers upon recommendation from their teacher.  PeaceKeepers are trained with a very specific set of skills which, under staff supervision, they use to help guide their peers through the process of resolving conflicts on the playground.  Being asked to serve on this team is considered to be an honor and members are respected by staff and students, alike.

For more information please contact Mrs. Olmstead, or call 338-6490.

Spinelli Walking Club

In a world of increasing technology, virtual reality, and an endless stream of information demanding both our time and attention, we recognize that sometimes it is important to get back to basics. The Spinelli Walking Club is dedicated to getting students on their feet, going outside, getting their hearts pumping, and their bodies moving!

Progress is tracked through Walking Club Cards. When each card is completed, students earn charms to remind them (and to show off to others) how many miles they have traversed!

Get up, get moving, and see what the rush is all about!

For more information please contact Miss Kylie, or call 338-6490.
